Useful Tips On Purchasing A Memory Card

By Cecilie Blaber

Most of the electronics today use memory cards to store digital photos, mp3s, videos and other date. Different devices have different memory cards designed for them which varies in their shape, speed and capacity. This guide will provide basic information to help you find the best memory card for your devices.

Suitability

Even if a memory card fits into a slot on your devices doesn't necessarily mean it's compatible. Every digital camera or cell phone, etc., are designed to accept specific cards. Before looking, check your devices and find out which one are compatible with each device.

Memory Cards Types

Dozens of formats have been made but, not all of which are still available. These are some of those common formats which are presently used by consumer electronics

There is the Secure Digital brand. This card actually looks like SDHC. The difference between them is that, while SD can store data up to 4GB, SDHC can store as much as 32GB and more. A backwards-compatibility feature also exists between them. An SDHC memory card slot could be substituted with an SD card, though there is no possibility of this happening the other way round.

Other smaller versions of secure digital cards are MicroSD and MiniSD. They are used for gadgets like MP3 players and cell phones. MicroSD cards can function well in normal SD card slots with the help of an adapter.

Compact flash cards can carry up to 100GB. These are not as common as SD card, but they're starting to gain popularity.

Card Speed

The speed of cards determines the rate at which they exchange data with internal memories of devices. Typically, speed is 4-6 MB/s or 9-12 MB/s. Higher speed levels are more favorable for pictures taken in quick sequences.

Class 6 cards, which have a speed of 6MB/sec, are the least type required for shooting HD videos.

Class 10 (10MB/s) cards easily exceed the standard minimum needed for full HD movies.

For the highest speed rating required for full HD movies with professional quality, as well as extremely high-speed and high resolution digital cameras, the most suitable storage cards to use are the UHS-Class 1 cards.

Internal Memory

Every device may possess a specific amount of internal memory, similar to RAM in computers. Such storage is different from any memory card that could be plugged in. When the internal memory is not sufficient to hold data, the expansion slot of the device should be checked.

NAND and NOR are acronyms which explain the different ways that memory cards can write and wipe away data. NOR flash memory used to be suitable for up to 100,000 write-and-erase sequences, though they are not in use anymore. NAND can be used for as much as 1,000,000 write-and-erase sequences. There will be need to purchase new memory cards once their limit is exceeded.

Care and Feeding

Wetting, twisting, and bending, are incorrect ways to handle storage cards. In addition, inserting them wrongly can spoil them. Therefore, they should be properly cared for and stored in places where they can be located easily.

The Difference Between The Memory Cards And Computer Memory

Essentially, computer memory is used in reference to the physical devices which are used to save data on a computer or a machine. It also refers to the way in which the computer classifies or orders this data, which in a sense is not dissimilar to the way in which information is stored in our own minds, hence the term: computer memory. Information which is stored on the computer memory comes in the form of a series of sequential instructions or any other data which needs to be stored either temporarily or permanently. Temporary data is normally solved using

an SSD or solid state device, such as memory cards or a solid state disk. The central difference between the memory of a computer and the memory which is held on a solid state disk is that memory is generally used to save information such as RAM, which is quick to access, while solid state devices tend to be used for slower information. Storage tends to be a term which is used in reference to data which can be stored on a permanent basis, while Memory is used to refer to temporary state devices, where, as the name suggests, the information is only to be stored for a limited period of time.

However, as technology has advanced, the difference between the two has become increasingly indistinct. For example, memory saved on a storage system is now known as virtual memory, memory which is a component of the machine or computer which allows lets the central component of the computer or kernels to multitask, meaning that while one request or task is being received or carried out, another can be completed simultaneously. An SSD or a solid state drive is a data storage device such as memory cards which use solid state memory to store persistent data in the form of a solid state disk.

Persistent data is information which your computer would lose in the event that it was to lose power without the user’s prior knowledge. Traditional hard disk drives or HDD use moving parts like movable read/write heads and spinning disks, while a solid state drive uses a micro chip or a non volatile memory chip in order to store information, which unlike traditional hard disk drives do not use moving parts.

These solid state drives or SSDs are better than their predecessors in many respects; they are much quieter than older formats such as floppy disk drives which tend to grind loudly when in use, and they also need reduced latency and access time, latency being how long a time delay is in a particular system, and access time being the time between a message being sent to a computer.

They can also be used on the same interface as a traditional HDD or hard disk drive, which allows to the switchover to be made between old storage devices and newer ones. They are highly portable (Which as a downside can result in devices such as memory cards being lost easily due to their decreasing size) As of 2010, it is predicted that many SSDs will use NAND-flash memory which can be used to store information in the event that there is no available power source.

Valuable Micro Sd Card

Micro sd card is a portable flash memory chip used in devices like digital cameras, cellular phones, and audio players. Appearance of micro sd card was never a issue. Its easily recognizable among consumers all over the world. You can see the appearance of the micro sd card just about the size of a postage stamp. Its available in varied capacities and with good transfer speeds.

Most important factor of micro sd card is that the greater the capacity of the micro sd card the great faster will be the transfer speed. It has specific card format that based on the older Multi-Media Card (MMC) specification. Micro sd card is one of the most popular flash card formats with higher consumption in the world. Its "Secure Digital" component is a copyright protection scheme built into the chip for delivering best features of the electronic devices.

Now mobility life of consumers completely depend on micro sd card. micro sd card memory capacities of feature-rich mobile phones can be expanded. Also can enjoy the high storage of media rich files like music, movies, video clips, pictures, ring tones etc. Importance of consumption of micro sd card has been enhanced so much that its not only limited to the phones only.

Possibility of sharing content collections with friends, family and colleagues using micro sd card removable storage solution specifically designed for mobile phones with expansion slots is quite easy now. You can very comfortably move data between mobile phones using this card. If user is changing service or upgrading the handset, then micro sd card lets easy transfer of phone lists, settings and ring tones. Also the micro sd card ultra-small size consumes very less power from the handset delivering longer battery life on their phones. Just click the valuable micro sd card and enjoy the consumption.

Four Popular Uses For USB Flash Memory

One the most widely used inventions of the past 20 years are the ubiquitous USB Flash Memory sticks. Variously known as Jump Drives, Thumb Drives, Memory Sticks, and many other names, these portable memory devices are to be found everywhere.

1. The most common use is with PC's and Laptops for storing and transferring files, and they are not only to be found in the Computer Science or Engineering departments. There are probably very few college students today, regardless of their major, that do not own at least one such device.

2. Memory cards using the same technology are also widely used in digital cameras. The large capacity is what allows hundreds of pictures to be stored before it is necessary to download the images and clear the memory.

3. Another very popular use for USB drives is as a give-away at trade shows. Promotional flash drives are a welcome and useful item, and much more functional than an emblazoned key chain or desk calendar.

4. This product has seen an explosion in capacity and a great reduction in price in recent years. When they were first introduced in the late 1980's flash drives could only store a few megabytes of data, and that data came with a respectable price tag. It is now quite common to find devices with 16 gigabytes of memory for under $80.

5. It is a key component of the popular MP3 players, as well as cellular phones, ATM's, and just about any device that uses upgradeable software, known as firmware.

Look for there to be more uses for this type of memory in the near future. As the reliability increases and cost decreases, they may replace hard drives in some applications.
